Pay your council tax

We issue a council tax bill each year to every household in Warrington for the forthcoming financial year.

You can pay your council tax bill in 10 monthly instalments from April to January, or 12 monthly instalments from April to March.  If you want to pay in 12 monthly instalments you must contact us before 15 April.  We must receive your payment by the date specified on your bill.

If your account is in credit and you’d like a refund, or a payment you’ve made hasn’t been allocated to your account, please contact us.

Ways to pay:

Direct debit

Paying by direct debit is the easiest way to pay for you, and it saves the council money as we don't have to process cash and cheques.

You can choose to make your payments on either the 5th, 10th, 20th or 30th of the month.  Payments can be spread over 10 or 12 months, but if you want to pay over 12 months please contact us by 15 April.  Yearly or half yearly payments can also be arranged.

Standing order

To pay by standing order you need to complete a form at your bank or building society or set up regular payments using online banking.  Remember:

  • You should allow extra days for your payment to go through the clearing bank system
  • You will need to change the amount of your standing order each time your council tax changes
  • You must quote the council tax reference number for the bill you are paying
  • If you are paying your council tax over 10 months you would need to cancel your standing order after the 10th month and restart it for the next financial year
  • You need to provide the council’s bank account number: 03383385 and sort code: 01-09-17

From your bank account

You can pay using your personal internet or telephone banking service.  You will need to quote your council tax account number (the first 9 digits), as well as the council's bank account number: 03383385 and sort code: 01-09-17.

By cheque

Cheques should be made payable to 'Warrington Borough Council' and crossed A/C payee. Your council tax account number should be written on the back of your cheque.  We can't accept post-dated cheques.

In person 

You can bring your cheque (see above) to Contact Warrington at 26-30 Horsemarket Street in the town centre.  Sorry, we cannot accept cash payments. 


Take your barcoded council tax bill and your payment to any PayPoint outlet. PayPoint can be found at many newsagents, supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations – wherever you see the PayPoint sign.

Post Office

You can pay in cash or by cheque, just take your bill to any Post Office.  Please note that the Post Office may charge for the service. 

Please make cheques payable to "Post Office Ltd" and crossed "A/C Payee". Warrington Borough Council’s Giro Number is 6119131. Please also quote your council tax account number from your bill.


Allpay is a swipe card facility, which allows you to make payments at PayPoint and Post Office outlets if your bill does not have a barcode on it.  If you'd like to pay by this method, please contact us and we can arrange for a card to be sent to you. 

At your bank

You can pay by cash or by cheque, just take the council tax bill to your bank (some banks may charge a fee).

Please make the cheque payable to "Warrington Borough Council".  Please quote the council’s bank, National Westminster Bank (sort code 01-09-17), account number 03383385 and your council tax account number.  We can't accept post-dated cheques.

By phone

Have your council tax account number and an appropriate debit card to hand then choose one of the following methods:

  • Automated phone system: 0300 456 0530 
    This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calling this number from a landline or mobile phone will be charged at your normal rate.
  • Speak to an advisor: 01925 443210 
    We're available Monday to Friday, between 9am-6pm.

Please note that there may be a minimum payment of £2.
