Different types of council tax discounts and exemptions

Exceptional hardship and personal circumstances

If you are in severe financial hardship or there are other exceptional personal circumstances which mean you may be struggling to pay your council tax, you can apply for a special discount.

Applications must be made in writing, either by letter or email, to the council tax team.  Use "Section 13A discount application" as the title of your letter or email:

Postal address:

Benefits and Exchequer Services
New Town House
Buttermarket Street
Warrington
WA1 2NH

Email address: counciltax@warrington.gov.uk

You must provide clear evidence of hardship or exceptional circumstances.  The Manager of Exchequer Services assesses claims on a case-by-case basis to decide whether a discount can be given and how much - it can be between 1% and 100%.  If agreed, discounts are usually only for a short period of time.

We can't give a discount if you feel that the council has not satisfactorily delivered, or is still not delivering, a particular service which you feel you are entitled to.  If you do have a complaint about the way we deliver service(s) please do contact us to discuss it so that we can help, or you can make a formal complaint.
