Registered and unregistered childcare
Childcare is divided into two categories - registered and unregistered.
Registered childcare is childcare that is registered and inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). It includes day nurseries, childminders, pre-schools, school nurseries and out of school care.
Not all childcare has to be registered with Ofsted, though some may choose to go on the voluntary part of the childcare register these include people who care for children aged eight years and over, childcare in your home (nannies, au pairs, babysitters, mothers' helpers), sports coaching providers, carer and toddler groups and shopping centre créches.
It is the responsibility of families to choose services carefully. Always check details with individual providers to ensure that their service meets your needs and the needs of your children.
