Registering a stillbirth

A stillbirth must be registered within 42 days.

If the stillbirth happened in Warrington you can register it at Warrington Register Office. Please call 01925 442194 us to make an appointment.

Alternatively you can register a still birth at any register office in England or Wales.  The office will send the details to us and we can arrange for any documents to be forwarded to you.

Please remember to bring along the certificate issued by the doctor or midwife.

Who can register a still birth?

If the mother and father are married at the time of the stillbirth, either parent may register the stillbirth.

If the mother and father are not married to each other at the time of the stillbirth, the mother alone may register. If the father's details are to be included, both parents must be present at the registration. If this is not possible, please telephone the register office for advice.

OR If the child was conceived as a result of fertility treatment

Any of the following can register the stillbirth:

  • the mother
  • the father, if he was married to the mother at the time of treatment
  • the second female parent if she was in a civil partnership with the mother at the time of treatment

What information will the registrar ask for?

When attending to register you will be asked questions regarding name, dates, addresses and places which will feed into the register entry (see below).

To help ensure the accuracy of the information recorded it would be useful if you could bring supporting documentation with you, such as:

  • Passport(s)
  • Driving licence
  • Utility bill
  • Birth and marriage / civil partnership certificates

Do not worry if any of these documents are not available as the registrar can still proceed to register the stillbirth without them.

Information you will be asked

The registrar will need to know:

  • the date and place of stillbirth
  • whether the baby was a boy or girl
  • if you have chosen a name, this can be included
  • the mother’s full name, date and place of birth and occupation
  • date of marriage (if applicable)
  • number of previous births
  • father’s (if his details are to be included) full name, date and place of birth and occupation.

Certificates

After the registration has been completed you will be given a free certificate and a form to give to your undertaker to enable the funeral arrangements to be made.

Further certificates can be purchased if required. These cost £4.00 each at the time of registration.

Registers in current use are held at the local Register Office and only the child's mother or father (if the father's details are included in the entry) can obtain a copy.

Certificates from older registers can only be obtained from the General Register Office (GRO). To buy a copy please call the General Register Office on 0300 123 1837 or visit the GRO website.
