Remembrance Service road closures

The Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph, Bridge Foot, has special significance this year, as it falls on the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Following a review of the event management plan for this year’s service, and following guidance from Cheshire Constabulary, the decision has been made to close Bridge Foot entirely to traffic for the duration of the service.

This will equate to a full closure of all traffic access to Bridgefoot between 10am and noon on Sunday 11 November. Mersey St, Bridge St, Wilson Patten St, Knutsford Road, Wilderspool Causeway and Riverside Retail Car Park will also be inaccessible to traffic for the duration of the service. Brian Bevan Island will remain open, though the entrance/exit to and from Bridgefoot will remain closed.

The multi-storey car park on Mersey Street will, however, be open from 8am to 6pm for those wishing to attend the service or visit the Riverside Retail Park or town centre. St James’ Business Centre car park will also be made available for those wishing to attend the service or access the town centre.

Local businesses, stakeholders and transport operators who will be directly affected by these closures have been made aware and despite the travel disruption expected, the safety of those wishing to pay respects on this momentous year is paramount.

Acknowledging the significance of this year’s service, on the centenary of the end of the Great War, we would encourage as many people as possible to attend the service this Sunday, to stand with fellow Warringtonians in remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy today.
