Highways schemes keep west Warrington moving
Motorists in west Warrington can look forward to smoother journeys, thanks to the completion of one major highways scheme, and the start of another.
Work has been completed on the first of several Omega Local Highways investment - the widening of Burtonwood Road to two lanes, southbound, between Charon Way and the roundabout junction of Westbrook Way / Burtonwood Road.
The £5m project - funded by Warrington Borough Council, Omega Warrington Limited and The Department of Transport (via a successful National Productivity Investment Funding bid) - will reduce queue lengths, improve journey times and enhance facilities for cycling and walking along this stretch of road.
At the same time, work is getting under way on the £1.15m Burtonwood Environmental Improvements Scheme. The project is implementing a series of traffic management initiatives across the Burtonwood and Collins Green areas, to deter through traffic, manage speeds and improve safety for all road users. The scheme was the subject of a public consultation in late 2018 during which a high percentage of people surveyed supported the proposals.
Improvements will include carriageway resurfacing, installation of traffic management measures, new pedestrian crossings at key locations, junction improvements, road markings, street lighting, signage and minor landscaping.
The work – which is due to be completed in October, is being carried out in phases to minimise disruption to the local community and motorists. Phase 1 of the works (Clay Lane / Hayley Road South) will run until 21 April, with phase 2 (Clay Lane / Hayley Road North) commencing on Monday 22 April, with various initial investigatory works already commenced.
Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for highways, transportation and public realm, Cllr Hans Mundry, said: “It’s vital that the right transport infrastructure is in place to support the Omega development. These projects are an important part of our work to provide additional highway capacity and resilience, and deliver improved cycling and pedestrian facilities for the wider west Warrington highway network.”
Further updates Burtonwood Environmental Improvements Scheme will be provided throughout the duration of the works on a fortnightly basis – detailing the phasing of the works, the temporary traffic management arrangements, progress of the scheme, road closures and alternative routes.
