Key changes for South Warrington’s bus network are moving ahead, including the reintroduction of the hourly cross-boundary service to Altrincham via Broomedge.

Coming in September, the changes will offer a half hourly service into Greater Manchester, delivering the best possible coverage for South Warrington.

What are the planned improvements?

  • Change to the Warrington hourly service to Sale, renumbered as Service 5A, will run via Latchford to Sale Metrolink, replacing the current Service 5 route through Partington, providing convenient connections to the Bee Network buses and trams. The Sale to Altrincham section of route will be removed as there are options already available on the Bee Network.
  • Reintroduction of an hourly bus service from Warrington to Altrincham, renumbered as Service 5 via Broomedge and Little Bollington, offering a faster, more direct service from Warrington, Stockton Heath, and Lymm.
  • New service - Altrincham to Lymm via Dunham and Warburton, with hourly Bee Network service 280.
  • With these changes the Bee Network 279 will be withdrawn.

Additionally, under the new plans, Service 6 will no longer serve Cobbs Estate (Monday to Saturday). Customers in this area can utilise the regular Services 7 and 8 for travel to Warrington and Stockton Heath.

Warrington Borough Council Leader and cabinet member for transport, Cllr Hans Mundry, said: “These improvements will provide better bus service coverage for South Warrington as a whole, which is great news for passengers.

“I’m particularly pleased that we are improving connectivity between the town centre and Lymm and reintroducing hourly services to Sale and Altrincham, alongside further improvements to enhance the resilience of the South Warrington bus network.

“We’re committed to delivering a first-class bus service in Warrington, and we will continue to work hard to ensure all available funding is allocated effectively to deliver the greatest benefits to passengers across the borough.”

The improved service will be introduced from 1 September 2025.
