Warrington at War book

A powerful new book celebrating Warrington’s resilience during the Second World War has been launched by local historian Janice Hayes.

Community

Warrington At War offers a vivid account of life in the town between 1939 and 1945, drawing on personal stories, archive material from Warrington Museum, and photographs that capture the spirit of a community united in adversity.

The book explores how Warrington’s men, women, and children faced air raids, rationing, and the challenges of wartime industry, while highlighting the town’s role in key military operations, including Risley Ordnance Factory and Padgate RAF Camp. It also reflects on the post-war transformation that shaped modern Warrington.

Deputy Leader of Warrington Borough Council Cllr Jean Flaherty, who met Janice Hayes at Warrington Town Hall to support the launch, said: “This book is a remarkable tribute to the courage and determination of local people during one of the most challenging periods in our history. Janice has captured not only the facts but the human stories that make our heritage so rich. I encourage everyone to read it and reflect on this important part of our town’s legacy.”

Author Janice Hayes added: “I wanted to bring to life the experiences of ordinary people who faced extraordinary challenges during the war years. Their resilience and sense of community shaped the Warrington we know today, and I hope this book helps readers connect with that legacy.”

Warrington At War is published by Amberley Publishing and is available to purchase online and at Warrington Town Hall and Warrington Museum.
