How to apply

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or special educational needs or a disability, you may be eligible for travel assistance.

We recommend that you read our home to school transport policy and check our eligibility criteria before submitting your application.

Please only apply when your child’s placement at a school/college has been agreed.

You will need to supply:

  • EHCP (if your child is in receipt of one).
  • Additional supporting evidence such as health documentation, behaviour support plans, risk assessments and any relevant information.
  • If a wheelchair user, the specifications including make, model and measurements.
  • Proof of Low-Income entitlement.

Other than enabling access to education, the other long-term aim of transport assistance is to enable a child or young person to develop independence. So, before applying, you may wish to read about the types of transport available at Local offer transport - what types of travel assistance are available?

What happens once we have received your application?

We look at applications in the order they arrive. When we have all the information you need to supply we will make a decision on your application. We will aim to inform you of our decision within 15 working days but this can sometimes be extended.

If your application is made after the deadline specified for the new academic year, this may extend beyond the usual decision timeframe.

Once we have received your application, a Transport Officer will process your application. This application will be assessed by the Transport Panel to determine eligibility. If your child is eligible, the Panel will determine the right level of travel assistance required in line with our policy guidelines.

You will be notified of the Panel’s decision in which you will be offered assistance. Once this assistance has been agreed, the appropriate arrangements will start to be put in place.
