Many schools typically experience a number of traffic related issues at the beginning and end of the school day. We have implemented a second ‘School Street’ scheme to create more space around schools and improve road safety.
A School Street scheme is where a section of road or roads outside a school temporarily prohibits all motor vehicles during the schools opening and closing times to effectively create a vehicle free zone. Removing vehicles outside schools creates a safer environment for children travelling to and from school. The scheme is in support of the school encouraging active travel by walking and cycling for the journey to and from school, which in turn will help the environment by reducing congestion and pollution.
No vehicles will be able to enter the restricted road during term-time between the times of operation. We will follow the Statutory process to introduce a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) which will legally prohibit any motor vehicle from using the School Street area whilst in operation. The scheme will be enforced using temporary barriers. New gateway signs will indicate the restricted area and the street becomes a pedestrian and cycling zone during the indicated hours of operation.
