'Right Home, Right Size' – Downsizing Support Scheme
Are you living in a home that’s too big for your current needs? The Right Home, Right Size scheme helps social housing tenants move to smaller, more suitable homes, freeing up larger properties for families and helping you save money and stress.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scheme you must:
- Be a Registered Provider tenant.
- Be under-occupying a 2-bedroom or larger property by at least one bedroom.
- Have held a social housing tenancy for at least 12 months.
- Have completed an application with Under One Roof.
- Be willing to downsize by at least one bedroom without causing overcrowding in the new home.
- Can demonstrate that you are able to sustain a tenancy independently and manage your own housing responsibilities effectively moving forward.
Right Home, Right Size Incentives
If you successfully downsize within the scheme you could receive:
- A cash incentive for downsizing by one bedroom, plus additional incentives for each additional bedroom released.
- Moving assistance grant to cover van hire, packing, or removal services.
- Discretionary redecoration voucher for your new home.
- Support with utility reconnections and other essential costs.
- Priority status on suitable smaller properties.
Support Provided
- Dedicated Housing Needs Officer to guide you through the process.
- Help with form-filling and viewing properties.
- Liaison with support services for vulnerable tenants (e.g., older people, disabled residents).
- Financial advice to ensure you are not worse off post-move.
Application Process
- Register interest
- Eligibility assessment and joint home visit by your Housing Needs Officer/ RP Housing Officer.
- Personalised Housing Plan developed with you.
- Assistance with planning your arrangements.
- Incentive payment processed after your successful move.
