As the colder months approach, there are lots of things you can do to keep healthy and well this winter.

Health

The best way to protect yourself and others from seasonal illness is to get your winter vaccinations such as the flu and COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccinations not only help with keeping you well but also protect your loved ones and reduce pressure on the NHS.

Some people may be eligible to receive free winter vaccinations. Visit the NHS website to find out more about winter vaccinations and see if you’re eligible.

Other ways to stay well this winter:

  • Keep warm - Keeping warm over the winter months can help prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems. Heat your home to a temperature that's comfortable for you. If you can, this should be at least 18°C in the rooms that you regularly use. People in financial difficulty may find it more difficult to heat their homes sufficiently and this increases the risk of becoming unwell due to cold exposure. If you’re struggling with energy costs, support may be available through grants and benefits.  Visit gov.uk/browse/benefits/low-income.
  • Look after your mental health – Winter can feel isolating.  If you need support, visit Warrington’s mental health support directory - Happy? Ok? Sad?
  • Check in on others- Older neighbours, friends and family may need some extra help during cold weather.
  • Get cost of living support – If you are struggling with the cost of living there is support available. You can visit Warrington Foodbank website if you need extra support with food this winter and you can find further advice and guidance to help you navigate the cost of living crisis this winter on the council’s cost of living support directory.
  • Help prevent the spread of illnesses - Wash your hands regularly, sanitise surfaces, keep your distance if you feel unwell and cover your face if you cough or sneeze to help prevent the spread of illness. If you feel unwell call NHS 111 for non-urgent advice. Use A&E only for life-threating emergencies.

Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, said: “Winter can be tough, and illnesses spread easily. Getting vaccinated, keeping warm and looking out for each other are simple steps that can make a big difference.  Together we can help keep Warrington safe and well this winter.”
