Sankey Street / Bold Street Interim Improvements

The proposals for Sankey Street/Bold Street are intended to strengthen the ‘access-only’ restriction from the junction with Legh Street onto Bold Street, reducing through traffic and creating an improved environment for pedestrians and cyclists.  Parking on the south side of Sankey Street continues to be limited to further discourage through traffic and support pedestrian and cycle movements within this area.

The monitoring carried out indicates that the scheme has been successful in achieving the objectives and has shown that only a low level of through traffic is diverting away from the main routes of Parker Street and Wilson Patten Street to rat-run via Sankey Street/Bold Street.

The scheme was originally installed using temporary plastic red and white barriers and temporary signs, which were unattractive along this important route into the town centre. These have now been replaced on an interim basis with more substantial concrete planters and a temporary traffic island, which although still temporary are intended to improve the appearance of the area.

The interim scheme forms the initial stages of a major improvement scheme for Sankey Street, proposed as part of the First and Last Mile Masterplan.  The principles of the masterplan were enshrined within the Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document (https://www.warrington.gov.uk/supplementary-planning-documents) and aim to transform the way people travel around, into and out of the town centre.  Sankey Street forms an important gateway into the town centre and the aspiration is to create a transformed public realm in this area which reflects its civic and economic importance.

Funding has been secured from the Sustainable Travel Programme within the Warrington Town Deal and further details of the programme and the First and Last Mile Masterplan can be found on our Sustainable Travel Programme webpage

Initial work on these longer term proposals for Sankey Street will take place later this year and will be guided by thorough consultation with residents, business and stakeholders, scheduled for later in 2022 or early 2023.
