The plan lacks any intelligent and sustainable proposals whatsoever. It is ill conceived and the amount of damage that it will cause to the environment and the health of Warrington's residents is too great a price to pay. In 2016 a report by the World Health Organisation said Warrington had the 2nd worse air pollution in the North West. Air pollution is the cause of and is contributing to deaths from heart disease and asthma. These conditions will inevitably worsen as more pollution is created by the extra traffic from new housing, both from the actually building and the number of extra cars from new residents. Soils in the UK store billions of tonnes of carbon. During any proposed construction on Green Belt sites will cause the subsoil to be compacted which destroys the soil and its functions including the storage of carbon. New buildings on greenfield and agricultural land seals up soils preventing them from accumulating organic material and providing other important ecosystem services. The rate of urbanisation in Warrington, particularly to the South, has been continually increasing in Greenbelt areas. Yet, according to WBC Brownfield Sites Register, there are over 50 Brownfield Sites in the Warrington area. Why haven't all these been used for housing, warehouses and regeneration before destroying even more of our planet. If houses and the accompanying infrastructure are built then the resilience of the land to flooding has to be a major consideration. The loss of wildlife habitats would be disastrous. It is already happening on the building sites at Grappenhall Heys. We no longer see the swifts and swallows swooping over the fields, or the buzzards hunting. So many birds used to nest in the hedgerows, these have been hacked back to such an extent that far fewer will find a home there next spring. If the proposed developments go ahead and are similar to the ones at Grappenhall Heys, they will not be triple glazed or have heat pumps or solar panels. WHY NOT?
We're supposed to be leading the world combating climate change. WBC's plan goes against all the ideals and ideas for a greener more sustainable future
The existing Green Belt boundary was confirmed only 7 years ago in a plan that was supposed to last 20 years.
