Visiting forces

If you are a member of visiting forces and you are staying in armed forces accommodation which is owned by the Ministry of Defence, you don’t have to pay council tax.

If you’re staying in a privately rented or owned home, you don’t have to pay council tax as long as only you and your family live there, and your family is dependent on you. You will need to tell us who lives at the property, the council tax account number, when you moved in and provide proof you are from the visiting forces and the Ministry of Defence.

Foreign diplomats

If you are a foreign diplomat, you don’t have to pay council tax as long as only you and your family live in the property, and your family is dependent on you. You will need to tell us who lives at the property, the council tax account number, when you moved in and provide proof of your foreign diplomat status.

Members of international organisations

If you are a member of an international organisation (defined under Section 1 of the International Headquarters and Defence Organisations Act 1964) and only you and your dependent family live in the property, you don’t have to pay council tax. You will need to tell us who lives at the property, the council tax account number, when you moved in and provide proof of your international organisation membership.

If you don't live in an exempt property

If you or your dependent family don’t live in a property which is exempt from council tax, you may be able to get a discount on your council tax.
