Moving schools during the school year or In-year transfers are requests to transfer from one school to another.

They are any application that is not first admission to primary school (reception class) or first admission to secondary school (moving Year 6 to Year 7). Examples of an in-year transfer would be when a family moves address part way through a school year or a family moves from overseas.

Starting primary or secondary school

You can find all the details of starting primary school (reception class) or starting secondary school (year 6 to year 7) on our site.

In-year transfer information booklet

You will need to read our in-year transfer information booklet for parents before applying and you may want to visit the schools you are interested in, if so, contact the school to arrange a visit.

Moving school because of problems your child is having may not be the solution, please think carefully before you apply.

In-year transfer application form

We co-ordinate the application process on behalf of all Warrington schools. To apply for a place at a Warrington school, you’ll need to complete an application form for each child

Completing the form

There are seven sections to the form:

  • Sections one to six must be completed by the Parent/Carer.
  • Section seven must be completed by your child’s current school or most recent school.
  • Families who are moving to Warrington from overseas only need to complete sections one to six of the application form.

Please make sure all sections of the form are complete before sending as any form not filled in will be returned. Please note that it is not possible to apply for a school place any further in advance than four school weeks

Applying online

If you complete the online application, you must scan and upload the fully completed section 7 to the relevant section of the form. You can also email this to us after you've applied quoting your child’s name and the application reference number.

Year 10 and 11 admissions

As children sit GCSEs at the end of secondary school, moving your child during years 10 and 11 may not be the best option. Moving during the last two terms of year 11 can be particularly difficult. There are very few vacancies at any of our schools in years 10 and 11 because it is unusual for pupils to leave during these years.

If your child is already in a Warrington school, please discuss the reasons for the change of school with your current headteacher. It may be possible for the school to address any concerns you have so that your child can remain at their current school.

If you are moving into Warrington and you can’t keep your child in their current school, you should apply for a school place as soon as you know you are moving.

Things to think about before moving your child include:

  • Availability of places in the school you wish your child to attend
  • The options available to your child may not be the same as in their current school
  • The option groups for the courses your child is studying may be full
  • The examination boards that the school uses may not be the same as those used at their current school
  • Coursework they have already started may not be relevant
  • If you can’t match the options your child is already studying, changing school at this stage may reduce their chances of gaining qualifications
  • The change may be a source of stress for your child

If you believe that it is in the best interests of your child to move schools, we recommend that you discuss this with the headteacher of your child’s current school first, and then only apply if absolutely necessary.

Timescales

We aim to reply to in-year transfer requests within 15 school days of receiving a fully completed application.

School days are when the school is open, so any requests we receive less than 15 school days before a school holiday may not be viewed until the school has re-opened.

Appeals

If your child is refused a place at any school you have requested, you have the right to appeal.
